Davega Sports and Radio Stores were a
New York metropolitan area chain that
sold consumer durable goods,
appliances, sporting goods, and
apparel. They also started their own
record label. The company was founded
in 1879, expanded to 30 stores by 1954,
and survived until April of 1963, when
it declared bankruptcy. Eight of its
stores were acquired by Henry Modell &
Co. (parent company of today's Modell's
Sporting Goods) which submitted a
winning bid of $311,000 in an April
1963 auction. Henry Modell was the
president of the newly formed Modell's Davega, Inc.
The Davega baseball gloves were made by Denkert Sporting goods Company.
During the 1940s Denkert included
"The
Finer Points of Baseball" booklet,
inside each box of Denkert baseball
gloves. Denkert also did the same for
privately branded baseball gloves they
produced for other companies. Davega
player endorsed models such as
Joe Madwick, and Charlie Keller, came
with the booklet.
