Stadium & Grandstand Ticket Stub Dating Guide

Bleacher Ticket Stub Dating Guide

  NOTES:
From 1923 - 1979 the date was not included on New York Yankees Stadium Admission, Grandstand & Bleacher ticket stubs. In 1974 and 1975 the Yankees moved into Shea Stadium and undated General Admission tickets took the place of the Grandstand ticket. Shea Stadium did not have Bleachers seats. In 1976 when the Yankees moved back into the newly renovated Yankee Stadium, the "General Admission" ticket replaced the traditional Grandstand ticket but they were still printed without a date.

This guide is designed to help you identify undated Yankee ticket stubs but the method can be used to help identify ticket stubs for other teams. Using the team President, ticket design, the series letter, ticket prices, legal information or and the printing company, these tickets can be narrowed down to a specific year.

Once dated the ticket can be attributed to a specific game played, then value can be added to the generalized price guide listed above. A ticket stub will increase in value due to a significant event, milestone, or a hit, home run, win, etc. by a player of notoriety. The added collectors value will vary depending on the demand for that players memorabilia or historic significance. Examples could be a home run hit by a 500 home run Club member, A hit by a player with 3000 career hits, a win by a pitcher with 300 career wins or a ticket from a game that links a record involving consecutive games.

The Team President can help narrow down the era. Tickets dated to 1947 and before do have the Presidents signature at the bottom of the stub. Grandstand tickets dated to 1948 and after have the team President's signature vertically below the stub's perforation. As pictured below, the "g" in Daniel R. Topping can be seen on poorly torn stubs, ripped below the perforation. Michael Burke's signature is well below the perforation but can be identified as pictured below.

Stadium Admission & Grandstand Ticket Stub Dating Guide
First Step: Check the Header & Rain Check Logo
Step 1 - The first step in dating your ticket stub is to check the stub Header Rain Check Logo & Game No. box. Throughout the years the Yankees changed the header text, and "Rain Check" logo design at the top of the stub. This will narrow down the years to a specific era. Also take note of the Game No.'s.  The Game numbers were circled from 1923 through 1925, and the later part of 1926. Since then, numbers were printed in different colors which can help narrow it down to a specific year. Specific headers, game number boxes, and Rain Check logo designs can be used to differentiate the year. Below are sample of the different headers, Rain Check logos, and Game No. boxes. Header text includes: "Base Ball Club" from 1923-1929, Condensed to one word "Baseball" in 1930. "New York Yankees INC" 1948-1953 "INC" is dropped in 1954. The Word "Admission" is added below "Stadium in 1928 for games 32-77.

Step Two: Check Sales Tax & Total Price
Step 2 - The second step in dating your ticket stub is to check the sales tax and total price. The face value or total price of the ticket stub will narrow the years down to the era the Stadium Admission or grandstand tickets were sold. The Sales tax is added to the estimated price listed on the ticket, but because of the tax revenue act of 1928 no taxes were charged from 1929-1932. The Estimated Price shown above the tax line is adjusted, so to total the face value set for that year. The exact wording of the tax line and amount of tax taken, can narrow down the date to a specific era.
Examples of the wording used in the tax line include: Tax paid, Fed Tax, Fed Tax City Tax, St & City Tax, State & City Tax. (City Sales Tax did not appear on tickets until 1955) (State Tax did not appear on tickets until 1966)

Step Three: Check The Series Letter
Step 2 - The Third step in dating your ticket stub is to check the series letter. Once you have narrowed down the years your ticket is from based on the Price information, the series letter could be used to differentiate the years that have the same price information. The series letter is located above the serial number, and below the game number from 1923-1939. From 1940-1943 the series letter is located below the Serial number. Because of a price change and the addition of the Yankees logo (in '46) the years 1944-1946 do not have a series letter. The series letter is directly above the serial number, but below the line that separates the Game number, from 1947-1951. The series letter is located directly below the game number from 1952-1968. Finally from 1969-1973 the series letter is place before the serial number.

Step Four: Check the Back
Step 4 - The Fourth step in dating your ticket stub is to check the back of the Stub. In most cases Steps 1 - 3 should be enough to identify the year of your ticket stub. Checking the legal text, printing company credit line and the Canada dry ad on 1923 & 1924 stubs (1923 also has a blank back) will help confirm the year your ticket is attributed to. This step will also help in differentiating years such as 1955 & 1958 that have the same pricing & series letter but have different backs. Some backs with the same legal information might have a different color ticket stock, depending on the year it was printed.

Ticket backs from 1970-1979 the legal text is printed vertical with the National Ticket Co. credit line. See Printing companies below.
Step Five: Check the Printing Company Credit Line
Step 5 - The fifth step in dating your ticket stub is to check the Printing Company Credit Line. The Printing company used and the  location of the credit line can help confirm and identify the year the ticket is attributed to. Below are sample of printing company credit lines and the years they are attributed to.

Step Six: The Yankee Logo
Step 6 - The sixth step in dating your ticket stub is to check the Yankees Logo watermark. The Yankee logo color, style, size, or lack of one, could help narrow down the age of the ticket stub. The Yankees logo was first used in 1946 but it was unique to that year, as it was refined the following year, in 1947. All tickets printed before 1946 do not have the Yankee logo watermark. From 1947 to the present day the design of the Yankees logo remains the same but there are some years the logo was printed in blue, and the size of the logo is smaller. The Sample of the blue logo below is commonly found in red, on that rain check design.

1923 - 1929 Stadium Admission Rain Check Ticket Stub Dating Guide
From 1923 through 1925 tickets had the game No.'s circled until the beginning of the 1926 season, when the circle was removed. The Circle game No. was then used for the later part of the 1926 season. It is not clear at this time exactly when the circle Game No. was brought back or why. In 1928 games 1-30 have the Series letter "F" games 32-77 have no series letter, and the tax line was removed. The word "Admission" is added below the word "Stadium" in 1928, when the tax is removed and would remain this way until 1933 when it was removed in favor of the tax line.

1930 - 1939 Stadium Admission Rain Check Ticket Stub Dating Guide
The price of the Stadium Admission tickets remains at $1.00 in 1930 but because of the tax revenue act of 1928 no taxes were charged from mid 1928-1932. In 1930 the words Base Ball, as it appeared on tickets in 1929 and before is condensed into one word "Baseball" The .10 cents "Paid Tax" line returns in 1933 and is added to the estimated price of $1.00, for a total price of $1.10.

This is used until 1955 when the Sales Tax Line reads "Fed Tax City Tax". *In 1954 the Fed Tax is lowered from .21 for games 1-20, to .11 cents for games 21-77. Tickets 1-20 have the adjustment stamped on the back. Both the 1955 & 1958 stubs have the same price info & Series Letter. The back of the stub is the difference.
